About Us

What we do....

Turner Schools Radio will be a brand new radio station working with children across the Trust. It offers Turner Schools pupils opportunities to broadcast live on-air and benefit from a range of training and experiences. The radio station evolved from the award winning 105.9 Academy FM Folkestone, our town’s Community Radio station that was based in the Academy for 12 years. Academy FM was School Radio Station of the Year 2019, and has produced two winners of the BBC Rising Talent Award for Young Broadcasters, plus the national Community Radio Young DJ of the Year. Turner Schools Radio will build on this work, and focus on working with young people.

Turner Schools Radio provides opportunities for students of Secondary and Primary age to learn to present on the radio. This improves self-confidence and communication skills, and gives them a chance to showcase their performance skills. For students interested in technology and production, there is training available to edit programmes and produce the forthcoming Turner Schools Podcast. Turner Schools Radio will broadcast school events, and host regular interviews with local community members, charities, and businesses as well as providing useful information for parents and carers. We aim to be the best School Radio station in the country by 2025.

Turner Schools Radio has two studios in the Folkestone Academy, and is managed by Mr Sharp who has worked in the radio industry and media education for over 30 years, most recently as Academy FM Folkestone’s Station Manager.
